Stop At: 400 route du Pont du Gard La Bégude, 30210 Vers-Pont-du-Gard France
The stunning Pont du Gard aqueduct is one of the most magnificent man-made features in the region. The magnificent Roman bridge was built to carry water to Nimes. The Pont du Gard is the highest of all Roman aqueduct bridges and one of the best-preserved.
Rich in vines, the land alongside the Gardon river is lush and green, contrasting sharply with the rose-red stone used for the arches of the bridge. Windmills grace the hilltops, the paths are stony, without too much fancy, one can imagine a Roman centurion pacing along the river roads.
After Saint Pierre Chapel we will head down to the river. Swimming is discouraged but many do take to the water. We will picnic at the river’s edge and enjoy the stunning arcs of the bridge and the dramatic shadows it throws on the surrounding landscape.
