Stop At: Musee d’Orsay, 1 Rue De La Legion d’Honneur, 75007 Paris France
The guide will walk you the guests through the Museum. Built on the famous Gare D’Orsay, the only Station planned to link Orleans to Paris built to coincide with the Universal Exhibition of 1900, together with the Eiffel Tower, it turned out to be an exquisite Fin de Siecle Building. Threatened with destruction in 1970 , it was luckily enlisted as a Historic Building and by 1981 three young French Architects renewed it, enlarging it to 20.000 square metres of Floor Space over its four floors. This made it one of the largest Art Museums in Europe.
In 1981, the Italian Architect Gae Aulenti was asked to decorate the Museum in fitting state to receive the 2000 or so paintings, 600 sculptures and other 19 C. works which make it one of the amazing sights of Paris. Conceived as the Museum to bridge the gap between the Louvre and the Georges Pompidou Museum of Modern Art, it contains the greatest world collection of Impressionists and Post Impressionists with Masterpieces by Manet, Degas, Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Seurat, Sisley, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Toulouse Lautrec and others. The beautiful halls provide an unforgettable explosion of gaiety, fun, light and colour. This Musee D’ Orsay is here to remind us for ever the joie de vivre of the belle époque – THAT TWENTIETH CENTURY GIFT WHICH PARIS GAVE TO THE WORLD’S ART OF LIVING.
