When major public health problems linked to the city’s cemeteries led to a decision to move their contents to an underground site in the late eighteenth century. The former Tombe-Issoire quarries under the plain of Montrouge were chosen by Paris authorities as an easily accessible site outside of the capital at the time. The first evacuations took place between 1785 and 1787 and involved Paris’s largest cemetery, the Saints-Innocents cemetery.
