The castle of Azay-le-Rideau is built on an islet, between two arms of the Indre river.
The north facade, the first one we discover when arriving at the castle, is considered a masterpiece of architecture and sculpture from the first French Renaissance.
The south facade, seen from the reflecting pool, is certainly the best known of the Château d’Azay. Honoré de Balzac said it was like “a faceted cut diamond set by the Indre”.
The ground floor of the castle is restored to its 19th century condition, when the castle was owned by the Marquis de Biencourt. This mainly highlights the occupation of the castle by Anne-Elie-Marie de Montmorency (1803-1882) and Armand-Marie-Antoine de Biencourt (1802-1862).
