Why choose this Arles tour ?

In the Arles countryside, visit Montmajour Abbey, founded in 948 by Benedictine monks. This exceptional architectural ensemble was built in the Middle Ages on the island of Mont Majour. The Abbey incorporates a pre-Roman edifice from the 10th century, an abbey church and a 12th century Roman cloister built by Benedictine monks. Montmajour was extended in the 18th century with the second monumental Saint-Maur monastery to the west. Your ticket allows you direct entry to the monument.

What makes Provence Region Roman Abbey of Montmajour Entrance Ticket a unique experience ?

Make your own way to the Roman Abbey of Montmajour in Provence and use your pre-paid ticket to enjoy access. Once inside, set out on a self-guided tour and spend as long as you like exploring the magnificent abbey.

The Abbey buildings, including the chapter house, the refectory, the pantry, the library and the kitchen, can be reached by way of the cloister, restored in 1872. Visitors can admire the remarkable representations of imaginary animals, human figures and vegetation below the columns’ capitals, and admire the Saint-Pierre Hermitage, dating back to the 10th and 11th century (interior closed to visitors for safety reasons).

The Abbey has been a source of inspiration for many modern and contemporary artworks. Van Gogh (1853-1890) was one of the artists fascinated by Montmajour and Alain Krill’s  ‘Ascension’ in the abbey choir is a homage to his use of thick layers of colour.
