Uluguru Mountains

Morogoro contain some of the oldest original forest in Africa, and while it is much depleted these days, the range is green and scenic, and offers enjoyable hiking. From Morogoro the most popular route is to Morningside, an old German mountain hut to the south of town at about 1000m (about two to three hours on foot). The path starts at the Regional Administration buildings about 3km south of the town centre at the end of Boma Rd

Unique to the Ulugurus are over 100 plants, 2 birds, 2 mammals, 4 reptiles and 6 amphibians unknown elsewhere in the world. There are also a large number of additional species shared only with one or two other Eastern Arc mountains, and hence globally rare. Endemic species include African Violets, Impatiens, and Begonias which are popular pot-plants in the rest of the world.

It was established in 2008 to conserve the area’ unique ecosystem and protect its exceptional biodiversity for future generations. It was declared as Nature Reserve in 7/11/2008.

Enjoy three days safari to Mikumi NP. Your safari will start from Dar es Salaam by 4×4 tourist Toyota Land Cruiser with window sitting guarantee heading to Mikumi NP. On the way you will pass through the wide field of sisal plantation. You will pass through the different landscape driving along the Uluguru Mountain, the long range of mountain which starting from southern Kenya (Taita Hills). You will arrive in Mikumi NP for three days game drive with accommodation inside the park or outside the park.

Choma is a Traditional village about 8 kilometers from Morogoro town (6-7 Hours go and return). At Choma village, you might visit the waterfall where you can swim in the cool water after a long day walk. In the village, you may participate in Jikoni tour which means cook and eat traditional food with luguru family. Ulugulu traditional dance, potts making and mate weaving.

Hululu is an area you can easily watch endemic reptiles such as lizards, Uluguru three-horned, two and one-horned chameleons’ endemic plant species such as Allanblackia uluguruensis and saintpaulia goetzeana. On the way to Hululu waterfalls, you will find the Bunduki campsite and rest house.

Lupanga peak located in Uluguru north, east-south of Morogoro town at 2138m above sea level. The trail is steep, which starts at the end of Forest Hill Road, at Kibwe village passing through farmland and into the nature reserve along a ridge up to the peak. On a clear day, there are good views towards the eastern side of the Uluguru, also there is a Germany tower built at the peak which is used for viewing distant places. A walk to the peak may be dangerous in the wet season. It is recommended to use a local tour guide. On the way you can be able to see birds like Livingston Turaco, Silvery cheeked Hornbills and others. The peak is located in the Uluguru Mountain.

Lubanga peak located in Uluguru north, east-south of Morogoro town at 2138m above sea level. The trail is steep, which starts at the end of Forest Hill Road, at Kibwe village passing through farmland and into the nature reserve along a ridge up to the peak. On a clear day, there are good views towards the eastern side of the Uluguru, also there is a German tower built at the peak which is used for viewing distant places.
