Traditional Kintsugi

You might have the chance to meet Master Taku himself in the 11 o'clock class. Enjoy the art of recreating broken pottery into your one and only masterpiece. Take home with you the story you made in Japan. Kintsugi is a delicate technique; you are NOT allowed to bring any personal ceramic pieces to this course. You will use the plates prepared for beginners by the studio. In 2024, Master Taku is awarded with the Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon, the honorable commendation given to individuals who have made significant achievements in the fields of science, art, invention, improvement, and creation this year. Not only his talents as an artist, but also the fact that he dedicates a portion of profit to the charity was the big reason for winning this award. Thus, joining and enjoying his workshop, you will paying back to the society!

We will explain the history of kintsugi and lacquer for about an hour, and then you will have the opportunity to powder gold (23K gold) which is the final step in traditional kintsugi. Basically, lacquer is used for this workshop and gold is sprinkled on it. Therefore, after the trial, we will hand over the powdered plate at least 5-7 days later, or we will ship to your home for an additional fee. If you are in a hurry and would like to take home the kintsugi plate on the same day, please inform us(even using substitution paint it requires at least 1 days to be harden or cured). After taking this work shop you will know about traditional kintsugi and what is lacquer.

Kintsugi, meaning “joined by gold,” began in the 15th century when Japanese artisans developed a method of repairing broken ceramics with lacquer and powdered gold, honoring flaws rather than hiding them. Rooted in wabi-sabi, kintsugi evolved into a philosophy that embraces impermanence and the beauty of imperfection. In this hands-on workshop, held in a real artisan’s studio, you’ll learn traditional kintsugi techniques using modern materials. Guided by an expert, you’ll bond pottery with synthetic lacquer, fill missing pieces with resin, and dust your piece with silver-based gold powder. All tools and materials are provided in a relaxed, focused environment. You’ll leave with your own restored piece and a deeper understanding of Japan’s view of resilience and renewal — carrying both new skills and a tangible link to a timeless tradition.

Small, personalized classes with a minimum of two and a maximum of 6 students. Experience the serenity and depth of Japanese culture through Kintsugi in our intimate studio up the hill from the hustle and bustle of Shibuya crossing. Classes start with matcha tea and seasonal Japanese sweets to get into the right mindset for Kintstugi. Choose your own piece of crockery to repair and restore from our collection. Instructor with deep experience teaching traditional and modern Kintstugi techniques will guide you step by step through the restoration. Take home your restored piece as a special souvenir in our special gift boxes.

You can experience repairing broken objects using the traditional lacquering technique KINTSUGI. You will approach the WABI-SABI, which is viewed as a variety of beauty woven by changes without negatively accepting dirty or chipped vessels as deterioration. Please bring your ceramics or porcelain that you would like to repair. If you don’t, please let us know. (Only two items per person due to storage space limitations.) We will glue the broken pieces with lacquer. It takes about a week for it to harden as we use natural lacquer. If you would like to continue the process, please make a reservation after one week. Overseas travelers can send vessels in the process of being worked on by EMS. (Shipping cost is additional) KINTSUGI kit is available for purchase. ＊Please note: It won't be completed in one session. Natural lacquer can cause inflammation if it comes into contact with the skin. Always ensure that you wear gloves when using it.
