The Caroni Swamp is an estuarine system comprising 5,611 hectares of mangrove forest and herbaceous marsh, interrupted by numerous channels, and brackish and saline lagoons, and with extensive intertidal mudflats on the seaward side. The central section of the acreage is designated as a wildlife sanctuary and is the home of one of Trinidad and Tobago’s national bird, the Scarlet Ibis. The Caroni Swamp is the major roosting place for the Scarlet Ibis(Eudocimus ruber) and is also the home of over 100 avian species.

Castara Bay is located off the leeward coast of Tobago and set in the small fishing village of Castara. This small beach is one of the island’s hidden gems. When you are not enjoying the sparkling blue water, you can enjoy the sandy beach shaded by many palm trees and coconut trees, or watch the fishermen preparing the nets to bring in their daily catch. Some visitors have even helped with the nets–an experience in an of itself. Visitors to Castara Bay have fallen in love with it stating things as “tropical small island cove,” and “fell in love with the place [and] will be back. The Main Ridge Forest reserve is the oldest protected Rainforest in the western hemisphere. Experience the wonderful world of this ancient creation.  The protected area approx. 40 km2  of the island is the home of 12 species of mammals, 21 species of snakes, 16 of lizards and more than 200 species of birds such as Blue Back Manakin, White tailed Sabrewing , Collared Trogon, Blue Crowned Mot Mot , Orange winged Parrot and many more. The secluded Pirate’s Bay is located in the cove adjacent to Man ‘o’ War Bay in the small fishing village of Charlotteville. Some historians report that Tobago was a favorite harbor for pirates back in the 17th and 18th centuries, including pirates such as Black Beard and Henry Morgan. Movie lovers will also appreciate that Pirate’s Bay was used extensively throughout the movie “Robinson Crusoe” in 1952. Perhaps what makes Pirate’s Bay extra special is that the beach is only accessible by foot or boat. What this means is that, once you take the 15 minute walk, or are dropped off by a local fisherman, you will very likely be one of the only visitors there for a private beach experience.
