Your day begins with a walking tour of Bonaventure Cemetery to learn about the lives of notable inhabitants like Academy Award-winning songwriter Johnny Mercer, Georgia’s first governor Edward Telfair, philanthropist Mary Telfair, as well as the tragic tales of poet Conrad Aiken and Gracie Watson. The Frederick C. Robie House on the University of Chicago campus is considered one of the most important buildings in the history of American architecture. This Prairie style masterpiece is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the 20th Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright List. Houmas House Plantation Guided Tour

With over 30 rooms on show, visitors can immerse themselves in life as far back as the 16th century when Grace O’Malley the Pirate Queen of Connacht ruled the land and seas around the estate. Built upon the foundations of one of her many castles which can still be toured in the dungeons today, the original Westport House was built in 1650 by Colonel John Browne and his wife Maud Burke, Grace O’Malley’s great-great-granddaughter. Since then it has undergone a number of developments under the direction of the celebrated architects Richard Cassels (of Carton and Leinster House architectural fame), James Wyatt and Thomas Ivory, progressing from a smaller, one room deep residence with a central open court yard to the stately square house complete with beautiful balustraded terraces that we recognise today.

Andrew Low House


The Andrew Low House can be seen by docent led tours, which depart at 30 minute intervals (on the hour and half hour) every day. Tours discuss the history of the house and the Low family, showing how a wealthy family in Savannah would have lived in the 19th century. The home was built in 1848-1849 by architect John S Norris a notable architect from New York and designed in the Greek Revival style, with a mixture of Revival and Italianate details. The home occupies the entire southwest trust lot fronting on Lafayette Square. The Andrew Low House has one of the few surviving original gardens created in 19th-century Savannah, and the only one open to the public. The design of the parterre gardens dates from the mid century, shortly after the completion of the house. Their layout and planting plans have been preserved ever since, first by the Low family and later by the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America, the current owners of the house
