Guatemala has Mayan cities that had their heyday at different times, those of the Classic Maya period (200 BC to 900 AD) predominate in the north somewhat far from the current city of Guatemala, and those of the Postclassic period (900 AD to 1,524 AD) In the West, one of the most emblematic sites is Iximché, capital of the Kaqchiquel manor, nowadays the visitor can appreciate the vestiges that were left after the destruction caused by the conquerors, also this place was the scene of the foundation of Guatemala. As you may know, the Mayan civilization occupied the land from the south of Mexico to all Guatemala and part of Belize and Honduras. The kings of all cities wanted to leave a legacy, that is why we find pyramids, temples, stelae, and other forms of leaving a mark through time. We know that the immense Mayan cities of Tikal and El Mirador are the most popular in the area of Peten, however, we find other small cities around, such as Tayasal, where El Mirador del Rey Canek is located. This is one of the last Mayan kingdoms to be conquered by the Spaniards in the year 1697. By that moment, the city of Tayasal was already full of vegetation, so the Spaniards didn´t know about it. The existence of the city was officially reported until 1965, and new discoveries have been made since then. There is no doubt that you will enjoy this tour from beginning to end. Tikal was the capital that became one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient Maya. Although the monumental architecture of the site dates back as far as 800 BC. Tikal reached its peak during the Classic Period, between 200 and 900 AD. During this time, the city dominated much of the Maya region.

This place belonged to the Mam Mayan kingdom but was conquered by the Spanish and their allies in 1525 after an intense war. Then we will visit El Mirador Juan Dieguez Olaverri. Get amazed by all the beauty surrounding this place. This is one of the highest points in Guatemala and has some of the best views. There is an abandoned country house in the mountain, and it is a great stop for a picture, as well as the views of the entire valley. Lastly, don´t miss the chance to visit a small town in between Zaculeu and El Mirador Juan Dieguez Olaverri, it is a picturesque town that you will definitely like. This is the perfect circuit if you´re looking to do different activities in one day.

Iximche is a fascinating place. This was one of the main Mayan cities visited by the Spaniards in 1524, declared the first capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala. Visitors will be able to see the old pyramids built by the Maya, and some of the most active Ceremonial Altars where contemporary Maya use it to perform Ancient rituals and burn offerings to their ancestors.
