Marble Carving

You will gain hands on experience with traditional tools and techniques of carving marble! I will guide you thru the process of carving a small relief sculpture that you can then take with you. You will have a unique perspective of the history and art of marble sculpture.

Stone carving provides the perfect conditions where you can allow your thoughts to wander as the activity of carving becomes instinctive and unconscious. Choose from marble, sandstone or chalk. The workshops allows you to spend time with yourself in the company of others. Make a day of it by doing a short hike through the forest after the workshop and enjoy a lovely lunch in the village from a selection of cafés and restaurants.

Come to our beautiful garden that has been in my family for generations. I will introduce you to the basic of creating mosaics using all natural crystalline marble and granite pebbles collected from the local beaches of Naxos just as the Ancient used to. Design inspiration may come from archaic motifs. Work from our samples or bring your own ideas. Alternatively learn hand carving of marble and sculpture techniques. I will provide a worktable, a block of Naxos white marble for practice, a small stone for a relief carving, safety glasses, hand tools, hammer, files, sandpaper. Enjoy fresh lemonade, coffee or tea, and sample of the fresh fruits from the garden. Everyone takes their finished relief carving or mosaic with them.

Our tour guide and driver will pick you up at hotel lobby and bring you to visit the Marble Mountain, Lady Buddha then. MINIMUM OF PARTICIPANTS: 4 This discovery tour of the Carrara Marble Quarries will take you into the heart of the marble basins and into the town of Colonnata for a tasting of "LARDO PGI" and other local products! You will set off in an elegant Mercedes minivan to the Carrara Quarries and, crossing the road that winds like a snake to the top of the mountain, you will cross the famous Ponti di Vara bridges that together with the striking tunnels carved into the rock made up the “former Marble Railroad.” We will head straight into the heart of the marble basins to visit a closed quarry; this is a shared guided tour of just under an hour in what is called the “Cathedral of Marble” where the extraction techniques, machinery and history of this precious material will be explained. We will then take a walk through the streets of the town of Colonnata where a tasting of Lardo di Colonnata and other local products is planned. The languages available during the shared tour in the closed quarry are: Italian, English, French and German.

Join a full-day trip from Hoi An to My Son Sanctuary and Marble Mountains. Start with an early morning hotel pickup to be the crowds. Be driven to the My Son Sanctuary, the religious center of the Champa Kingdom from the 4th to the 13th century. During your time at Monkey Mountain you will learn about its history. There will also be plenty of time for photos. 12:30 pm – 13:30 pm: Leaving Monkey mountains for lunch. The Marble Mountains are located in Hoa Hai Ward, Ngu Hanh Son District, about 20km Northeast of the old town of  Hoi An. The Marble Mountains, also referred to as Ngu Hanh Son or Mountain of the Five elements, consist of  five  mountains:  Thuy Son (Water), which is the highest, Moc Son (Wood), Kim Som (Metal), Tho Son (Soil or Earth) and Hoa Son (Fire). Thuy Son is popular tourist destination because of its stunning beauty.
