Howler Monkeys

To start this tour, We will drive through the Soberania National Park in our way to the Town of Gamboa, during this drive we have chances to stop and see Sloths in the wild. We will follow the Panama Canal north to the town of Gamboa, where the Chagres River meets the canal. We will ride along the waters of the Panama Canal right next to the ships passing through on their way to the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Our destination is Gatun Lake, where we will cruise around islands created during the canal construction and see the abundant wildlife on its shores. Where we can see capuchins, howlers, and tamarins up close in their natural habitat. Once we finish with our canal and lake boat ride (around 1.5 hours), we will return to Panama City for hotel drop off.

The Community Baboon Sanctuary (CBS) is a pioneering project in voluntary grassroots conservation. The goal is to sustain the habitat of the Black Howler Monkey (called ‘baboon’ in the local Creole dialect) while promoting the economic development of the participating communities. The result has been an innovative project in sustainable ecotourism that protects the habitat for the endangered Black Howler Monkey and other species while offering a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the rain forest and witness Black Howler Monkeys in the wild.

A half hour fun boat ride through the mangroves takes you to Monkey River village where you head upriver into pristine rain forest. Some of its members are dedicated to fishing for red crab, while others are engaged in agriculture. Howler Monkey Trail Next, we will arrive at the howler monkey trail. This protected area of tropical dry forest is home to a diverse variety of exotic species of birds, reptiles, and mammals. Among them, we will frequently observe the presence of howler monkeys in their natural wild state. Experience at a Cocoa Farm In the afternoon, we will continue our experience at a cocoa farm. We will learn the entire process of making organic chocolate, from the cocoa fruit to the various uses we will give it to taste several types of chocolate. We will prepare our own chocolate and enjoy a typical lunch prepared outdoors to taste typical Ecuadorian food.
