Hike Uluguru

Morogoro contain some of the oldest original forest in Africa, and while it is much depleted these days, the range is green and scenic, and offers enjoyable hiking. From Morogoro the most popular route is to Morningside, an old German mountain hut to the south of town at about 1000m (about two to three hours on foot). The path starts at the Regional Administration buildings about 3km south of the town centre at the end of Boma Rd

Unique to the Ulugurus are over 100 plants, 2 birds, 2 mammals, 4 reptiles and 6 amphibians unknown elsewhere in the world. There are also a large number of additional species shared only with one or two other Eastern Arc mountains, and hence globally rare. Endemic species include African Violets, Impatiens, and Begonias which are popular pot-plants in the rest of the world.

Choma is a Traditional village about 8 kilometers from Morogoro town (6-7 Hours go and return). Hululu is an area you can easily watch endemic reptiles such as lizards, Uluguru three-horned, two and one-horned chameleons’ endemic plant species such as Allanblackia uluguruensis and saintpaulia goetzeana. On the way to Hululu waterfalls, you will find the Bunduki campsite and rest house.

The trail is steep, which starts at the end of Forest Hill Road, at Kibwe village passing through farmland and into the nature reserve along a ridge up to the peak. On a clear day, there are good views towards the eastern side of the Uluguru, also there is a Germany tower built at the peak which is used for viewing distant places. A walk to the peak may be dangerous in the wet season. It is recommended to use a local tour guide. On the way you can be able to see birds like Livingston Turaco, Silvery cheeked Hornbills and others. The peak is located in the Uluguru Mountain.

Mikumi National Park and the Uluguru Mountains are the best places for a short break to discover Tanzanian traditions and nature. We will take you to the famous Masaai tribe, you will be able to take part in their everyday life. The next day is 8 hours in the park hunting wild animals. Get ready to face a lion face to face.
