Like the rock of Gibraltar the Brimstone Hill Fortress was in the hands of two European powers, who have fought each other for control of this Hill and the island. Both the British and the French built forts to defend themselves from the Spanish and from each other. In 1689 the French were able to capture the British Fort Charles in Sandy Point. By taking cannons to Brimstone Hill which conveniently overlooked Fort Charles. The British were then able to recapture Fort Charles in 1690. Recognizing its strategic importance the British started the building of this magnificent fortress. And that's just a taste of the rich history to be explored on our exclusive hike.

Our Tour de Force  begins from the cruise ship Terminal in Port Zante. In 15 minutes, you will learn about the history of Port Zante and historic downtown Basseterre. On the Volcano Caldera Trek you get to hike up every tier of the volcanic cone and you are almost guaranteed to get a bit dirty as you hike, explore, climb and pull yourself to the Caldera of mount Liamuiga. This trek starts at 750ft above the Caribbean Sea and has the perfect back drop with an amazing view of the sweeping landscape down to the Caribbean Sea. The memorable thing with this tour is that you will actually witness the changes in the tropical succession stages as you ascend higher and higher towards the caldera. You will feel the temperature drop, you will see the changes in vegetation, and you will experience the increasing incline as you get closer and closer to the caldera. It was designed by British military engineers, and was built and maintained by enslaved Africans. It is one of the best preserved historical fortifications in the Americas. The complex of fortifications were constructed on Brimstone Hill, a very steeply sloping hill situated close to the sea on the Western, Caribbean coast of St. Kitts.
