Vieques Kayaks Bio Bay excursions are guided in solid and semi clear bottom kayaks through the glowing waters of Mosquito Bay, located on the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico. Mosquito Bay is the brightest Bioluminescent Bay in the world! Children age five and older are welcome to join the tour with a parent or adult, so long as a ticket is purchased for each participant. To do our tour, guests MUST BE aware that Vieques is an island apart from Puerto Rico so you will need to take a ferry from Ceiba or a plane from San Juan or Ceiba and stay overnight at the island. Kayak through the mangroves of Laguna Grande and experience the natural glow of bioluminescence. Visibility varies as it's a natural phenomenon; tarps may be used to reduce moonlight or other light sources when needed. Advisories: 1. Sargassum, a harmless local seaweed, may occasionally be present and emit an odor. 2. Solo kayakers and odd-numbered groups will be paired up. 3. You will get wet—dress accordingly. 4. During peak season, high traffic may cause light contact between kayaks; our experienced guides ensure a safe and enjoyable tour. 5. Participants aged 6–14 must ride in a tandem kayak with an adult. Participants aged 15–17 must be accompanied by an adult on the tour.

There are only a few places in the world where bioluminescence can be seen year round. And luckily for travelers to the Nicoya Peninsula there is one such place here. Bioluminescence is a light created by living organisms through a chemical reaction, biological light. In the gulf it is the algae that create this magical effect. Upon being disturbed, the algae give off a burst of light. Since there are millions of them it looks like sparkles in the water. The wavelengths are in the blue to green area and depending on the amount of algae it will appear as bluish or greenish sparkles. One of the best ways to see this phenomenon is to get a look from above, and kayaking is a great way to see it well. The algae will stick to your paddle, your hand or floating debris glowing for many seconds if you encounter a strong patch. When you kayak over shallow areas, fish will be scared up and it looks like fireworks under water as they take off, leaving a trail of “fairy dust” in their wake.

Early tour time: Sunset & bioluminescence Tour While the sun is setting, our friendly guides lead you on an amazing evening clear kayak or paddle board adventure on the Indian River Lagoon. We'll also hike around Horseshoe Crab Island! Search for horseshoe crabs and other marine life such as dolphins and manatees as the sun sets. After sunset, we'll paddle into the night as dinoflagellates bioluminescence illuminates the water and fish below us. Later tour time: Bioluminescence & Stargazing At this launch time, it is very dark and the stars shine bright against the night sky as the bioluminescence glows below us. We recommend downloading a star gazing app and to view the constellations above. **Tours may be delayed up to 1 hour to allow weather to pass** When dinoflagellate bioluminescence season ends, comb jelly bioluminescence season begins! Then, you will also be given high powered multi-colored LED lighting systems for your vessel to further enjoy the glow.

We are more than glad to provide a lifetime time experience at the Gulf of Nicoya Paquera, This is a bay so the water is very calm which makes it perfect for Kayaking. We normally get to enjoy an amazing sunset, while paddling 800 meters, where we can appreciate the ferry, and some islands as Isla Chiquita and Isla Jesucitas. We will take you to the biggest concentration of bioluminescence, where you will be able to see and touch it. It is just amazing, we have not found words to describe this unique experience. Bioluminescence is one of the things you should experience during your holiday in Costa Rica. We will kayak through the bay of Paquera and pass some islands. As we start our tour before sunset, we often experience some incredible views in the sky what gives an extra addition to our tour and we go on shore to one of the small beaches where you are able to take a swim if you like. As we operate in small groups, we can give a more personal attention to our clients.
