The blessed land of Olympia, as characterized by many, is a home to the most praised sanctuary of ancient Greece, dedicated to the father of the Gods, Zeus. It is the place where the most significant games of ancient Greece, the Olympic Games, were born, which were held every four years since 776 BC in honor of Zeus. The lighting of the Olympic flame takes place in ancient Olympia before each Olympic Game and proclaims the start of the Games. We will depart early in the morning and drive to the north side of the Peloponnese. After about 2 hours we will reach the village of ancient Olympia. You will have time to visit the archeological site where you will find the stadium, the gymnasium and temple of Zeus. Then you will visit the museum where you will admire the famous Hermes of Praxiteles. Finally you will have free time in the village for lunch and a walk.

The archeological site of Olympia is breathtaking and awe-inspiring. The entrance to the archeological site looks like a passage into space-time. It is a place to be visited, at least once in a lifetime! On this trip we will see many great things, including a museum that houses the most beautiful sculpture of antiquity. We start our tour by transferring you from Nafplion to Olympia. Our first stop is a visit to the ancient stadium where the Olympic Games took place. Here, we will also explore the sanctuary of Zeus, which housed one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, a 13.5 meter golden statue of the god, made by Phidias. Continuing on our tour, we will then visit the archaeological museum, where we will see outstanding findings of over 400 exhibits and see the amazing Hermes of Praxiteles. We will walk through the beautiful surrounding areas with beautiful buildings and temples that depict the beauty, harmony and balance of ancient Greek art. At the end of the tour, we will have free time to enjoy a coffee or a meal at the nearby local cafes and restaurants. Our tour finishes with our return transfer to Nafplion.

This tour takes us across the Isthmus of Corinth and the Peloponnese to the valley of the river Alfios to see the ruins of the ancient Olympia, the historic site of the Olympic Games. This was the greatest of the Panhellenic Games and every four years Greeks from all the different city-states would put aside their disputes and come together to compete. The importance of Olympia can still be seen from its ruins, including the Temple of Zeus, which once contained a 13 meter statue of the god made of gold and ivory, the Temple of Hera, the stadium and the Shrine of Pelops. Even today, the Olympic Flame is lit in Olympia and then taken on a relay across the world to end up in the city hosting the Olympic Games. As we cross the Isthmus of Corinth, we stop by the Corinth Canal. Cut 6.4 kilometers through solid rock, it connects the Saronic Gulf and the Corinthian Gulf. It was finished in 1893, even though the idea existed at least as far back as 602 BC!
